At Fearnhill School, our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. It is broad, coherent, ambitious, and firmly rooted in our commitment to helping every student achieve their potential.
Our broad curriculum ensures that all students have access to the full national curriculum, with every subject valued equally. We operate a three-year Key Stage 3 to give students more time to explore a wide range of subjects before choosing four options at GCSE.
A coherent structure underpins every subject area. Each faculty carefully sequences learning so that key concepts and ideas build logically over time, helping students to know more, remember more, and apply their understanding with confidence. The curriculum also builds directly on knowledge from previous Key Stages, particularly Key Stage 2, to ensure continuity and progression.
Our curriculum is ambitious for all learners. It is knowledge-rich and adapted to meet the needs of every student, including those with SEND or from disadvantaged backgrounds. Support is in place to ensure full access for everyone—never by lowering expectations, but by removing barriers. We encourage all students to view university, including Russell Group institutions, as a realistic goal, while also celebrating alternative pathways such as apprenticeships.
Across all subjects, we place a strong emphasis on developing reading. Reading is taught actively in every discipline, with teachers trained to use reciprocal reading strategies to strengthen comprehension and literacy. Our focus on disciplinary literacy ensures that students can read, write, and think like subject experts.

We believe that assessment is not simply a means to record achievement — it is an essential tool to support student learning and subject progress. Our aim is that all assessments work for students, not against them: they are motivating, formative, and responsive to each learner’s needs.
We recognise that for assessment to be genuinely inclusive, it must be adaptable. We therefore make proactive adjustments to our tests and tasks so that every student can experience success, build confidence and maintain momentum. By ensuring that the purpose of assessment is improvement — not just judgment — students are encouraged to learn from errors and move forward.
In each subject, our assessment calendar is structured around low‐stakes assessments at each half term. These allow teachers to spot where learning gaps are emerging, and to respond with curriculum adaptations rather than wait until students fall behind. In this way we emphasise keeping up rather than catching up. Each half term assessment draws upon the foundational knowledge and skills (including keywords) as well as reviewing previous learning.
Underpinned by the latest evidence, our approach draws on the research that frequent, low‐stakes assessments contribute to better retention, increased motivation and reduced anxiety around high‐stakes tests. Studies show that multiple opportunities to engage in assessment for learning help students build stronger study habits, and enable teachers to intervene earlier.
Frequent assessment is embedded in our teaching practice where Q&A, whole-class response and live feedback are part of the Fearnhill Lesson Cycle embraced by all teachers.
Through this vision, we aim to embed assessment as a powerful lever for learning and achievement across our school community.
Details of upcoming assessments will be posted here shortly.
