    Art - 3D Design

    Overview 

    This practical course encourages students to respond to three-dimensional design projects through the use of creative drawing and other visual recording techniques; model making and material experiments. Students will evaluate their work and critically analyse the work of others.

    Rather than being technology based, the course appeals to students who are keen to express their creative skills. 

    You will explore a broad range of practical 3D/2D skills whilst embedding the fundamentals of design. You will then apply the skills you have learned in briefs using research, development of ideas and refinement to finished pieces. All work is carried out in sketchbooks, prototypes and model making. You will cover a range of techniques including use of tools and workshop machinery.

    Your practical work follows a pathway of analytical research of artists’ work, development and idea refinement to final practical pieces within the exploration of a given theme. Personal exploration is encouraged, as are independent student work, thought and idea generation.

    Students develop individual projects driven by contextual research of designers that reflect their interest in design such as: Product Design, Architectural Design, Interior Architecture, Lighting Design, Small Scale Furniture Design. This culminates with them producing an original and imaginative three-dimensional manufactured object.  

    Throughout your studies, you will have access to our dedicated Art and Design studios. The 3D Design and Technology studios are fully equipped to allow you to develop your skills and experiment artistically in a safe and creative environment.

    Art - Fine Art

    BASIC COURSE DETAILS

    Art and design is about using your creative and analytical skills to explore the world around you, working across a range of media to start developing your practical expertise. Whether you want to pursue a career in the creative industries or complement your other subjects. Fine art will develop your understanding of the creative process and learn to communicate visually. Areas of study include everything from painting, drawing to installation and sculpture.
    You will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of fine art media, processes and techniques. You will be made aware of both traditional and new media. You will explore the use of drawing for different purposes, using a variety of methods and media on a variety of scales and will use sketchbooks/workbooks/journals to underpin their work where appropriate. You will explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to a range of art, craft and design, from the past and from recent times, including European and non-European examples. This will be integral to the investigating and making processes. Your responses to these examples will be shown through practical and critical activities that demonstrate your understanding of different styles, genres and traditions. You will be aware of the importance of process as well as product

    WHAT WILL I STUDY?

    This course offers the opportunity to examine and investigate a range of topics from the various approaches in Fine Art including:

    • drawing and painting.
    • mixed-media, including collage and assemblage

    • printmaking (relief, intaglio, screen processes and lithography)
    • moving image and photography.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    At A-level for component 1 you will develop work for a personal investigation into an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by written material. This will count for 60% of your total A-level marks. In component 2 you will produce personal work in response to one of eight exciting starting points which will count for 40% of your total A-level marks.

    Biology

    BASIC COURSE DETAILS

    Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics, ranging from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems and from micro-organisms to mammoths.

    Biology is a fascinating and popular choice of subject.  Teaching is based around practical and tutorial sessions.  Problem solving and communication skills are developed through class and independent study.  Students are expected to analyse factual information and communicate their ideas in writing.  The subject is taught on a topic basis and each topic is supported with a booklet of resources including a study guide that outline the content and practical work.

    IS IT FOR ME?

    Biology is a demanding, but rewarding A Level choice.  The level of factual recall and application of knowledge and understanding is very high and as such you will only be comfortable with the requirements of the course if you achieved a level 6 at GCSE.

    10% of the total A Level marks require the use of higher tier GCSE mathematical skills and as such a good grade in Mathematics GCSE is essential.

    Biology is a very versatile A Level and is one that is well respected by universities and employers all over the country.  It may be combined with relatively unrelated subjects, like law or business studies, for it develops skills in numeracy, reasoning, problem solving, communication and research.  It a great choice for people who want a career in science, health and clinical professions such as:

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    There will be three external written exam papers: Biological processes (01) will assess content from modules 1, 2, 3 and 5. Biological diversity (02) will assess content from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6. Unified biology (03) will assess content from all modules (1-6).

    Practical Endorsement
    Practical endorsement in biology is achieved by successfully completing a series of practical tasks over the two years of the course. Paper 3 will focus on the practical element of the course. 

    Business Studies

    At sixth form you have the option to study AQA A Level Business Studies.

    COURSE DETAILS

    The A-level Business course introduces you to all you need to know about working in business.  You will learn about the different business areas such as marketing, finance, operations and human resources.  In year two of the course students learn about how businesses analyse their strategic position in a market, decide on their strategies and implement them.

    IS IT FOR ME?

    Ideally you would have studied Business Studies at GCSE level but this is not essential. Successful Business Studies students have a broad range of skills. They keep up to date with business affairs and are comfortable writing essays by the end of the course.  Additionally, successful students have good mathematical skills, this is essential when they come to study accounts.  Finally, students must have good comprehension skills as there is a lot of reading throughout the course and paper three requires students to apply their answers to an extended business case study.

    WHAT WILL I STUDY?

    A level business is made up of 10 different themes:

    3. Decision making to improve marketing performance.

    Business is adaptable to most degree programmes.  By studying Business, you will be able to define and assess achievement of your knowledge, skills and understanding which will be needed if you plan to progress to undergraduate study at a UK higher education establishment, particularly (although not only) in the same subject area.  For example:

    Chemistry

    BASIC COURSE DETAILS

    Chemistry is the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living things.  Everything you see around you involves chemistry in some way.  Studying chemistry will encourage you to keep your eyes open and may dissuade you from buying things without considering what they are made of!  Chemists provide many of the materials of everyday life, together with the knowledge to improve healthcare and to appreciate the major environmental problems that face us all.  Knowledge of chemistry will give you a greater understanding of the world we live in and could lead to a career rich in challenge, variety and opportunity.

    IS IT FOR ME?

    WHAT DOES STUDYING CHEMISTRY LEAD ON TO?

    Chemistry is a great choice of subject for people who want a career in medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy, biochemistry, chemical engineering and the hundreds of other courses with chemistry in their title.  It will also equip you for a career in industry, for example in the petrochemical or pharmaceutical industries.  However, you aren’t restricted to sciences – chemistry students go on to study accountancy, law, economics, business studies and many other courses.  It is a very versatile A-Level and is one that is well respected by universities and employers all over the country.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    There will be three external written exam papers: Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry (01) will assess content from modules 1, 2, 3 and 5. Synthesis and analytical techniques (02) will assess content from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6. Unified chemistry (03) will assess content from all modules (1-6).

    Practical Endorsement

    Practical endorsement in chemistry is achieved by successfully completing a series of practical tasks over the two years of the course. Paper 3 will focus on the practical element of the course.

    Computer Science

    BASIC COURSE DETAILS

    A level Computer Science is a two-year course that prepares students for the OCR H446 specification examination.

    IS IT FOR ME?

    Students do not need to have studied computer science at GCSE in order to take up the topic at A Level but should ideally have at least a grade 5 in GCSE mathematics. There is a great deal of opportunity to engage in practical coding in this A Level so having some experience in at least one modern professional programming language is desirable. All that is really required is a desire to develop an advanced understanding of computer science and to apply coding skills to solve real-world problems. This is a great option for students who intend to take computer science or related subjects to degree level or an apprenticeship, and also for students who wish to study a subject in which being able to use these problem solving skills with computers in other subjects such as analysis of the night sky or the modelling of a new engine.

    WHAT WILL I STUDY?

    The computer science A Level covers a range of theory topics, including the principles and understanding linked to programming, hardware and software, networks, systems development life cycles and implications of computer use. The course allows you to use any programming language that meets the needs of the project.

    WHAT DOES STUDYING COMPUTER SCIENCE LEAD ON TO?

    This A Level develops a student’s ability to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically and apply skills in and an understanding of computing (including programming) in a range of contexts to solve problems. In addition, students will delve into producing graphical user interfaces and object-orientated programming solutions, in order to create a substantial piece of software using modern design methods which they can use to display their skills and talents to future employers and places of study.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    A Level Computer Science is assessed through two written exams (each worth 40%) and a Programming Project (worth 20%). 

    Core Maths

    Core Maths

    AQA Certificate Level 3 Mathematical Studies

    Core Maths is an excellent option for students who wish to continue to improve their maths to support other subjects they wish to study at A Level such as – well, just about anything! 

    As a core maths student you will study the following topics in two lesson hours per week:

    • Analysis of data
    • Maths for personal finance
    • Estimation
    • Critical analysis of given data and models
    • The normal distribution
    • Probabilities and estimation
    • Correlation and regression

    Apart from the unit on the maths needed to manage one’s own personal finances, these topics are geared towards the analysis and interpretation of data. This fits perfectly with the type mathematical content of A Levels as diverse as economics, history, psychology, biology and sociology.

    Any Fearnhill Post-16 student with at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths will be welcome and able to study Core Maths and it is highly recommended for any student that feels unable or unwilling to study maths at A Level.

    Criminology Diploma

    Criminology Diploma WJEC (Level 3)

    Course details.

    Criminology is a modular two-year A Level equivalent course in the study of the nature, causes and control of criminal behaviour in both the individual and society.

    It is interdisciplinary in that it draws on concepts from psychology, psychiatry, law, sociology and social anthropology. Criminologists tackle some of the most pressing issues and dilemmas we face in society. They carry out research on crimes and try to explain why they happen, looking into the family life, mental state, social status, biology and other aspects of the lives of criminals. The main aim of criminologists is to find ways to predict, deter, and prevent future crimes. They may assist law enforcement in catching criminals.

    Is it for me?

    This course is suitable for students with strong literacy skills. You will be required to write at length so will need good writing skills. You will also need good organisational skills as there is a lot of content to cover and you will need to do independent work to add to your class notes.

    What will I learn?

    You will cover a range of topics such as:

    • Changing Awareness of Crime – Different types of crime, such as hate crime, domestic abuse, honour crime, cyber-crime and white-collar crime. Reasons why some crimes tend to go unreported, and the consequences of this for the victim, the offender, and the wider community.
    • Criminological Theories – The definition of criminal behaviour and deviance. The social construction of criminality and how our perceptions of what is criminal change over time, culture and situations.
    • Biological theories of criminality – including the role of genes. Individualistic theories of criminality such as the role of childhood experiences. Sociological theories of criminality, including the impact of social structure and labelling. How social change and campaigns lead to changes in the law.
    • Crime Scene to Courtroom – The process of criminal investigations. Investigative techniques. How evidence is processed. Trial processes.
    • Crime and Punishment – The processes of law-making and the organisation of the criminal justice system. Forms of social control. Aims of punishment. Roles, contributions and effectiveness of agencies of social control.

    How will I be assessed?

    Of the 4 units 2 are internally assessed and 2 are an exam of 90 minutes.

    English Literature

    BASIC COURSE DETAILS

    The study of English Literature is a rich and rewarding experience. It encourages you to look beyond the written word and delve deeper into the minds and motives of a vast array of people, from many time periods and parts of the world. You will be exposed to critical viewpoints you may never have considered, and you will actively debate writers’ motivations. Most excitingly, you will encounter some of the greatest works of literature from the past millennium, and perhaps discover a new literary passion, historical interest, or way of thinking.

    A level English Literature is a two-year course, which prepares students for the Pearson Edexcel specification and examinations.

    You must have a GCSE grade of 5 or higher in English Literature to study this course.

    IS IT FOR ME?

    Do you enjoy reading? If the answer to that question is ‘no’ or ‘not really’, then this course is not for you. English Literature A Level is for those with a curious mind, a real interest in reading, and a willingness to be challenged. You should also enjoy discussing a variety of topics, including dinner party taboos such as sex, politics, and religion!

    WHAT WILL I STUDY?

    Open book examinations – You will get clean copies of the prescribed texts provided for the examination. Copies of the Critical Anthologies (used for Shakespeare) must not be taken into the examination.

    Component 1 DRAMA - Written examination consisting of two sections.

    Section A: Shakespeare One essay question from a choice of two on Othello, incorporating ideas from wider critical reading (AO1, AO2, AO3, AO5 assessed).

    Section B: One essay question from a choice of two on A Streetcar Named Desire (AO1, AO2, AO3 assessed).

    The assessment length is 2 hours and 15 minutes.

    30% of the total qualification

    Component 2 PROSE - Written examination consisting of one section.

    Students answer one comparative essay question from a choice of two on their studied theme.

    Science and Society: Frankenstein, Mary Shelley and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (AO1, AO2, AO3, AO4 assessed).

    The assessment length is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

    20% of the total qualification

    Component 3 POETRY - Written examination consisting of two sections.

    Section A: Post-2000 Poetry One comparative essay question from a choice of two on an unseen modern poem written post-2000 and one named poem from the studied contemporary text (AO1, AO2, AO4 assessed).

    Section B: Specified Poetry Pre- or Post-1900 One essay question from a choice of two on Christina Rossetti (AO1, AO2, AO3 assessed).

    The assessment length is 2 hours and 15 minutes

    30% of the total qualification

    The Non-Exam Assessment

    This is where you can explore your own choices and preferences, follow themes and ideas that interest you and choose your own book to write an extended essay.  You will be guided and supported along the way, but you will be able to decide on your theme and write your own question.

    20% of the total qualification

    WHAT DOES STUDYING ENGLISH LITERATURE LEAD ON TO?

    An A Level in English Literature is extremely versatile and desirable. Students who wish to apply for any university course will be looked at favourably if they have English Literature, due to the transferable skills in analysis and understanding and appreciation of social contexts.


    Studying English develops your ability to use words to your advantage and to think and respond analytically. It is therefore particularly suited to students who wish to go onto further study at degree level, especially students who aspire for careers in education, law, media, forensic science, psychology, or business. If you are not sure what career you would like to follow yet, it offers a vast array of options.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    The course is externally assessed by 3 written examinations at the end of Year 13 as explained above. There is also a non-exam component, which is a 2500–3000-word comparative essay between two texts. You get to choose your comparison text and come up with your own question. One text must be written before the year 1900.

    Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

    EPQ is designed as a “stretch and-challenge” opportunity in addition to the standard three choices of subject, to investigate a topic beyond the normal confines of an A Level qualification. It demonstrates that you have some of the key skills required for university study and provides good evidence to include in a UCAS personal statement.

    What will I study?

    The choice is yours! You can produce an EPQ on almost anything. You choose the topic, develop a question/hypothesis, complete the research and then produce a 5000 word essay or artefact/production. This might be a painting, a series of photographs, an item of clothing, or even a website. You will be taught how to research, how to evaluate your sources and reference them, and then how to present your argument or finished piece. The final presentation requires learning important presentation skills.

    How will I be assessed?

    The skills being assessed are those of planning, independent research, analysis and synthesis of material, and the ability to reflect on your learning. The essay or artefact is accompanied by a detailed form which provides evidence of all these skills. At the end you will also give a presentation. The qualification is completed in Year 12.

    Where could this take me?

    Universities value students who undertake an Extended Project, mainly because the skills involved are those which they believe are important for students to access degree courses successfully. There are UCAS Tariff Points available. An A* grade can be achieved. For some universities, the points count fully, whilst for more competitive universities, the Extended Project could be the deciding factor when it comes to making an offer to an applicant. Other universities make students a lower A Level offer when combined with an EPQ. The Extended Project also provides students with useful skills for the workplace. These include project management, organisation, and presentation skills.

    Food Science & Nutrition

    Food Science & Nutrition AAQ Level 3 Diploma is equivalent to one A Level.

    Overview

    Food Science & Nutrition is a fascinating, hands-on course that explores the relationship between food, health, and the body. You’ll investigate how nutrients affect us, how food is produced safely, and how current issues such as sustainability and dietary trends shape what we eat.

    This qualification combines practical cookery with scientific understanding, making it ideal for students who love food but also want to know why things work the way they do.

    Unit 2 – Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat

    Discover how to keep food safe from production to plate. You’ll explore microbiology, contamination, legislation, and hygiene management systems, applying these principles through practical investigations and coursework.
    Assessment: Internal (coursework)

    Unit 3 – Principles of Food Hygiene and Food Safety in Food Production

    Investigate how food safety is managed in commercial and industrial settings. You’ll learn about risk assessment, hazard analysis, and the systems that protect consumers in large-scale food production.
    Assessment: External (written assessment)

    Unit 4 – Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition

    Research and evaluate modern topics such as food sustainability, global food security, ethical production, and changing consumer trends. You’ll complete an independent research project and present your findings.

    Geography teaches us to enquire and Geography teaches us to make informed decisions. Many questions and inquiries in our world do not have a yes or no or right or wrong answer; they require a decision and consideration of the facts. 

    Geography is a fascinating and popular choice of subject. A-Level geography is engaging and relevant to today’s students. It is a qualification that enables you to engage critically with real world issues and places, apply your own geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to make sense of the world around you and to help prepare you to succeed in their chosen pathway.

    A-Level offers an issues-based approach to studying geography, enabling students to explore and evaluate contemporary geographical questions and issues such as the consequences of globalisation, responses to hazards, water insecurity and climate change.

    Fieldwork

    A Level students must complete a minimum of four days of fieldwork. Fieldwork must be carried out in relation to processes in physical and human geography.

    This A Level course will enable students to be inspired by their geographical understanding, to engage critically with real world issues and places, and to apply their geographical knowledge, theory and skills to the world around them.     History

    BASIC COURSE DETAILS

    You will focus on two significant periods of change in world history.  One will be a depth study and one a breadth study.  You will be studying political, religious, economic and social aspects of history.

    IS IT FOR ME?

    You need to enjoy learning about the past.  You will develop skills of research, analysis, interpretation, using sources of evidence and debate.  You must have good literacy skills and enjoy extended writing and reading.

    WHAT WILL I STUDY?

    You will be studying Tsarist and Communist Russia 1855-1964.
    This involves the study of Russian history during a time of great change and revolution.  You will learn about the autocratic power of the Tsars and will study the key political, social and economic developments.  The Russian Revolution of 1917 is a fascinating period to study as it saw the fall of the Tsarist regimes and the start of new ideologies such as Marxism.  You will then study the emergence of the Communist dictatorships under Lenin and Stalin and the consequent reactions.

    You will be studying Religious Conflict and the Church in England 1529-1570.
    In this option, you will study a period of major change in the English church and government, focusing on issues which led England to break with Rome and the problems surrounding the establishment of a new Anglican Church and faith.  You will learn about the developments, regarding religious changes, in the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I.  You will study other key characters such as Wolsey, Cromwell, Cranmer, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Mary, Queen of Scots.

    You will undertake a personal study based on a topic of your choice.
    This takes the form of an essay of about 3500 words.  You will have a year to complete this essay.

    WHAT DOES STUDYING HISTORY LEAD ON TO?

    The skills acquired during the study of History open the door to many careers including journalism, media, law, teaching, civil service, politics, the business world and archaeology.

Tackling these subjects is incredibly rewarding and, as well a building self-confidence, demonstrates to future employers and places of further education that you have the qualities that make good employees and students. 

    WHAT WILL I STUDY?

    Maths A Level is made up of Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics.  The pure mathematics will include topics such as: algebra and functions; proof; coordinate geometry; vectors; differentiation; integration; exponentials and logarithms.  The applied mathematics will include both mechanics and statistics topics such as: kinematics; forces and Newton’s laws; moments; data presentation and interpretations; probability; statistical distributions and hypothesis testing.

    WHAT DOES STUDYING MATHS LEAD ON TO?

    A level Maths provides the foundation for a maths degree as well as a variety of other degrees such as: physics, chemistry and biology, economics and finance, engineering, medicine, veterinary science and agriculture, history, geography, and many more.  Today, many of the most exciting new careers require a foundation in mathematics.  Game design, app development, astronomy – some of the most stimulating job roles are filled with mathematics specialists.

    Whatever your future plans, studying A Level Maths will stretch your mind and endow you with abilities that stay with you for life.  Whether you’re deciphering statistics or managing a budget, your mathematical background will help you to think logically, analyse data and express yourself clearly.  These are fantastically valuable, transferable skills which are highly prized by employers across every field, as well as giving you a boost on a personal level.

    The course will be assessed at the end of the two years by three written papers. Paper one and two (2 hours each) will include all core elements of the course and is worth 67% of the overall grade.     Media Studies

    OVERVIEW

    The media play a central role in contemporary culture, society and politics. They shape our perceptions of the world through the representations, ideas and points of view they offer. The media have real relevance and importance in our lives today, providing us with ways to communicate, with forms of cultural expression, and the ability to participate in key aspects of society.

    The media industries employ large numbers of people worldwide and generate significant global profit. The globalised nature of the contemporary media, ongoing technological developments and more opportunities to interact with the media, suggest their centrality in contemporary life can only increase.  A Level Media Studies is a two-year course.

    IS IT FOR ME?

    You will be given the opportunity to develop a thorough and in depth understanding of key issues, using theoretical approaches to support critical exploration and reflection, analysis and debate. The study of a wide range of rich and stimulating media products is central to the specification, offering you opportunities for detailed analysis of how the media communicate meanings in a variety of forms.  You will debate key critical questions related to the social, cultural, political and economic role of the media.

    • Audio Visual – Original music video. 3 minutes to 3 minutes 30 seconds.  To include three or more filming locations; wide range of camera shots and movement to interpret/amplify the music and lyrics; shots of the band or artist to establish a clear identity; performance footage; representations of at least one social group; clear structure and an element of narrative conflict and equilibrium; editing of footage; graphics/titles to include title of programme, etc.

    AND either A or B:

    • (A) Online – a new, functioning website to include a working homepage and one linked page to promote your new TV programme to its target audience 
    • (B) Print – a front cover and double page spread feature article for a new independent music magazine to promote your artist or band to its target audience.

    All assessment components are completed in Year 13.

    Performing Arts

    The BTEC Level 3 Performing Arts – Extended Certificate course is designed to be a highly specialist, work related qualification that gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to prepare for employment. 

    The Extended Certificate is for learners who are interested in learning about the performing arts sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in performing arts. It is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.

    The course consists of three mandatory units and one optional unit. Units have students investigating practitioners work, developing skills for live performance, and working in groups to create and workshop performances.

    Physics is the most fundamental of the sciences, with its ultimate goal being to understand any and all aspects of our universe, from the apparently simple (e.g. the motion of a dropped object) to the highly complex (the decay of particles smaller than atoms).

    IS IT FOR ME?

    This course is for those who want to know just how and why the natural world works as it does, and covers a wide range of physics topics from the tiniest scale of sub-atomic particles to the evolution of the cosmos.  It aims develop an interest and enthusiasm for the subject along with the full skill-set needed to be successful within it (practicing physics requires a high level of mathematical, communication and thinking skills).  While it not essential to study A Level mathematics alongside A Level physics it can be highly beneficial and it is highly recommended.  The mathematical nature of many of the physics topics are well supported by the skills and techniques used in the mathematics course.

    A Level Psychology helps students develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of psychology and how they relate to each other. It provides the skills to carry out practical investigations and encourages students to engage with psychology in their everyday lives, designing their own experiments as part of the course. The second unit introduces some of the central areas of investigation in psychology such as moral development and responses to authority. These are organised in key themes of social, cognitive, developmental, biological psychology and individual differences. Each key theme is represented by a classic and a contemporary core study. In Issues in Mental Health, we look at the history and the current debates around treatment alongside ethical and practical considerations.

    In Criminal Psychology, we look at a range of issues from whether criminals are born or made, to what factors can influence convictions in the courtroom. We also look at the evidence for the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.     Sociology

    Why study Sociology?

    This subject involves both theoretical and applied elements. In other words, what researchers discover about behaviour is then used to improve peoples’ lives. Sociology seeks to describe, explain, analyse, question and understand a range of contemporary aspects of society and their historical context.

    This subject approaches our behaviour within our society from different perspectives. For example, we look at institutions in society like families and the education system from the point of view of our class and ethnic background as well as our gender. The subject relies on methods of research such as interviews, surveys and questionnaires – as well as observations and experiments – to inform our understanding of ourselves. This helps us to question what lies behind our assumptions about society.

    Globalisation is a multi-layered topic with an ever-changing set of problems as well as developments. It’s highly topical in today’s world and gives us an international perspective on how societies are interdependent and the forces which have shaped their formation.

    We also look at crime and ask questions such as what is a crime and who commits the most crimes? Are the criminals we catch just the tip of the iceberg? What happens to people who commit crimes like complex financial fraud that we often can’t see or understand?

    The Spanish A Level course helps students to both strengthen their knowledge of the Spanish language as well as broaden their understanding of the cultures and traditions of the Spanish speaking world.

    At Fearnhill, we study the AQA A Level Spanish course. Students will study more complex aspects of the Spanish language in the context of the culture and history of Spanish speaking countries, as well as studying Spanish literary texts and films. The focus is on how Spanish-speaking society has changed and continues to change, so the course covers aspects of current and historic social issues, the cultures of the hispanic world and their political landscape. We aim to encourage students, as the young people of today, to engage in the issues of the world around them and reflect on how life has changed within this.

    Although the course does focus on the Spanish language, the aspects of culture, society and artistic works will shape students’ cultural understanding and prepare them for the world of work after studies, whether that be in a Spanish speaking country or another. Students will end the course with a well rounded understanding and appreciation of the world around them, which is a skill highly sought by employers.

    Students will need to have previously studied Spanish at GCSE or have an equivalent qualification. We require a minimum grade of 6 at GCSE to ensure students have the skills and understanding required to transition to the A Level context.
