Wellbeing

A Fearnhill Student is Kind, Confident, Self-Aware & Resilient

A primary focus at Fearnhill School is to ensure students develop these important qualities so they are successful, happy and productive, both now and in the future. To this end, we ensure the following:

  1. Assemblies are planned to incorporate ‘The Fearnhill Student’ qualities, as well as Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development.
  2. Students receive regular teaching on our ‘Respect’ agenda.
  3. Our iThrive and Fearnhill Futures (PSHE/RSHE) programme uses high quality resources, chosen and tailored to meet the current and future needs of our community.
  4. We are in close partnership with an extensive range of well-being focussed agencies in order to provide bespoke support for our students
  5. We listen to our community, through regular surveys and 1-1 conversations.
  6. Students spend time with their form tutor every morning – their first port of call for support, and are supported by a highly trained pastoral team. All students can name a member of staff that they can speak to if they are worried about something.
  7. We recognise the additional challenges that special educational needs can bring and have an effective team to support our young people through those challenges.
  8. Our trained Mental Health Lead, Cate Brown, ensures that mental well-being education and response is tailored for our community’s needs, and for individuals needs.
  9. Our governing body regularly scrutinise our provision and practice to ensure it meets the needs of our students

It’s ok to be different at Fearnhill’.

This is a key saying at Fearnhill. We believe a thriving community is made up of a rich collection of individuals, all of whom have equal value and worth and that all should treat others as they themselves would wish to be treated.  To this end, our student-led ‘Diversity’ group aims to:

  • To educate students on all forms of discrimination, bullying and unkindness
  • To empower students to ‘call out’ these behaviours, ensuring they are culturally unacceptable
  • To facilitate student leadership to effect change

Our student-led Diversity group includes our pioneering Dignify Project Student Ambassadors (in association with One YMCA) who work closely with YMCA Dignify on issues such as misogyny and healthy relationships. Our work has been celebrated on ITV Good Morning Britain who came to Fearnhill  in 2025.

‘This isn’t a maths or English lesson, but it’s a subject at Fearnhill School that teachers say is just as important’. Will Godley, ITV GMB Reporter

Academic Curriculum

Student well-being isn’t confined to the pastoral team, but is embedded within our curriculum. For example, our curriculum is designed and reviewed in order to ensure students can flourish.

Holistic approach

It is said that students only spend 13% of their time in school. At Fearnhill we want to ensure that this time counts both academically and holistically, recognising that our young people  will eventually go on from here and be the change that they want to see in the world.
